How Often Should Fire Extinguishers Be Serviced?
A fire extinguisher isn't a one-time purchase — it's a pressurised device that loses reliability over time whether or not it's ever used. Skipping servicing is one of the most common (and easiest to fix) gaps we find during AMC takeovers.
Monthly: a visual check
Anyone on site can do this — check the pressure gauge is in the green zone, the pin and tamper seal are intact, the cylinder isn't dented or corroded, and it's still accessible (not blocked by stock or furniture). This takes under a minute per unit and catches most obvious problems early.
Annually: a professional inspection
Once a year, every extinguisher should get a full inspection by a trained technician — checking internal pressure, the condition of the hose and nozzle, and whether the agent itself (powder, foam, or gas) still meets specification. This is also when due-for-refill units get flagged.
Every 5 years: hydrostatic testing
Cylinders need hydrostatic pressure testing at intervals set by fire safety codes — typically every five years for most types — to confirm the cylinder itself can still safely hold pressure. A cylinder that fails this test needs to be replaced, not just refilled.
What happens if you skip it
- Pressure drops below the effective range without any visible sign
- Agents like dry chemical powder can cake or settle, reducing discharge effectiveness
- An expired or under-pressure extinguisher can fail a fire NOC inspection outright
- In an actual fire, a unit that looks fine but doesn't discharge properly costs you the exact minutes you don't have
